This is the Cat5e for burying next to serious power: a substation fence line, a trench that shares a route with high-voltage feeders, the yard of a plant full of large motors. A single foil is usually enough underground, but the low-frequency fields from heavy power get through foil, and that's what the braid is for. This cable wraps all four pairs in an aluminum-mylar foil and then a tinned copper braid (SF/UTP), with a tinned copper drain wire bonded to both. The UV-stabilized polyethylene jacket is rated CMX for direct burial and outdoor use across a -40 °C to 60 °C range.

Underneath are 24 AWG solid bare copper conductors with HDPE insulation, rated for Gigabit Ethernet. There's no gel, so it terminates as cleanly as indoor cable. It comes on a 1000 ft wooden spool with footage markings on the jacket.

Features

• SF/UTP dual shielding. An overall aluminum-mylar foil for high-frequency interference and a tinned copper braid for the low-frequency fields from power distribution and heavy machinery.
• Tinned copper drain wire. It gives both shield layers a corrosion-resistant path to ground.
• UV-stabilized LDPE jacket, CMX rated. Polyethylene resists moisture, soil chemicals, and sunlight, and is rated for direct burial, conduit, and exposed outdoor runs.
• 24 AWG solid bare copper. Full-gauge solid conductors for the lowest loss over a full 100 m channel, and no copper-clad aluminum.
• Gigabit rated. It runs 10/100/1000 Mbps links, and 2.5GBase-T on equipment that supports it.
• HDPE insulation. Moisture-resistant, with tight pair twists for crosstalk control.
• -40 °C to 60 °C operating range. It works through frozen ground and summer heat.
• Gel-free. No flooding compound to clean off at termination.
• Sequential footage markings. Measure trench runs and track what's left on the spool.
• 1000 ft wooden spool. Standard TIA-568 pair colors inside.

Where It Fits

It suits buried runs alongside high-voltage feeders and around substations, industrial yards and plants with large motors and drives, solar and wind sites with inverters and transformers, buried camera and gate feeds at utility and infrastructure sites, and any underground link where a foil-only shielded cable hasn't been enough.

Good to Know

Outdoor cable brings lightning and surge risk into the building with it, and a run next to high-voltage equipment more than most. Put a gas-discharge Ethernet surge protector at each entry point, bonded to the building ground, and ground the drain wire at one end through a shielded jack or patch panel. CMX cable is limited to 50 feet inside a building by the NEC, so transition to CM, CMR, or CMP cable at the entry. Bury it at least 18 to 24 inches deep, or per local code. This cable relies on its jacket to keep water out; for a high water table or a trench that floods, the gel-filled shielded burial cable is the better choice. For ordinary buried runs without heavy power nearby, the foil-shielded burial cable does the job for less. Solid conductors are for permanent runs; terminate on shielded jacks and patch panels, not crimped plugs.
